Awakenings (1990) is a biographical drama directed by Penny Marshall and starring Robin Williams, Robert De Niro and Julie Kavner. Based on Oliver Sacks' memoir, the film follows Dr. Malcolm Sayer, a neurologist who discovers the effects of the drug L-DOPA on catatonic patients who survived the 1917–1928 encephalitis lethargica epidemic.
